A guarenteed way to make sure I'll never read a book is to describe it as a 'fun romp.'  If I want a comedy I'll watch a movie.  Invariably when the authors think their writing is clever and funny and they're tweaking popular tropes, it only ends up tiresome and stupid.  I can count on one hand the books I've read that made me laugh, and those were ( Read more... )

On Facebook today I kept seeing things about a "miracle" baby born without a nose.  I wouldn't really call that a 'miracle."  A horrible and sad birth defect, maybe.  On the other hand, maybe he'll never know the misery of clogged sinuses or a broken nose, and putting a fake nose on should be reletively easy ( Read more... )

Now that his eyes are nearly cleared up, Gandalf has become a lot more recalcitrant about taking his pills and eye drops.  Usually me and Dwight are able to work together to hold him and administer the medication, but sometimes we have to do it alone.  It's like trying to hold a squirmy furry eel. The LA Times did an article yesterday about how a Nevada mental hospital was putting released patients onto buses to California.  This is reminiscent of a similar scandal a few years ago where private hospitals would take indigent patients down to Skid Row and abandon them there, sometimes still in their hospital gowns.  When confronted with the ( Read more... )
